This Week

We start the week off with Gibbous Moon (in the evening).  This traditionally is not my favorite part of the Virgo lunar  calendar.  I just find people are so picky.  See if you have a feeling like you are being viscerated.  I don't  want it to be so, just curious if you notice it.

We have a variety of aspects this week some a little annoying, some positive.

We end the week with the Pisces Full Moon.   Our spirituality gets tuned up and I will post a separate Full Moon post in a few days.

And of course on September 20 Pluto turns direct. I wrote about it back on New Moon.

PLUTO
In terms of this month on September 20, Pluto will turn direct having been retrograde since April.  This is all part of the bigger picture we have already discussed.  Pluto is churning up the status quo.  He is not content with business as usual.  He digs deep finds the flaw and then exposes it.   Pluto spends half of every year in retrograde motion.  Like a miner with a helmet and ax he goes back over the old tunnels to see if something valuable has been over looked.   In particular our power.    What is the death that needs to occur and where do we need the rebirth?
What is outdated?  What is obsolete?  Why are we hanging on to it?   Seriously, what needs to be released and eliminated?   Attitudes, fears, beliefs, style, approaches, our relationships with people?

The focus in on our friends and our flock.  How can you fly higher if your flock is low? How have you neglected that feeling of being with like minding people who are inspired on the same way as you are inspired?

Special Focus:

9/16: Sun/Saturn: Responsibilities are great. Burdens are heavy but results can be worth it.
9/16:  Mercury/Uranus.  Over compromising can cost.  Over rebelliousness can also cross.  Where is the place in between?
9/17: Mercury/Mars: Sparks, energetic thoughts and actions that stir things up in a welcomed way.
9/18: Venus/Saturn:  Values, Money, Love feel chilly.  Delays but not denial.
9/18: Venus/Pluto: Love of Power.  Powerful love.

Ray Merriman

I was thinking about Mars and Saturn in square next week and thought it would be interesting to go take a look at Ray Merriman's site and see what he is talking about these days.

A good read.

Short-Term Geocosmics

Monday, September 9, starts a 24-day period in which nine important geocosmic signatures will unfold. The first aspect to take place will be Mars in Leo, square Saturn in Scorpio, on September 9. This aspect is usually not that much fun. In fact, it is far too serious in most cases. It can be downright depressive, repressive, and suppressive. You need to cancel all of your appointments that day, avoid situations that can result in injury or disputes, and catch up on the work you now find overwhelms you because you procrastinated in completing it for far too long. This is “catch up” time. It is not the time to advance some new and brilliant thought. No one cares. No one has sympathy for you, now that you waited so long – too long, in their view, for now they are critical of you - to do that which was necessary to have done long ago. Still, it is a Saturn aspect, and our rule is that any market declining into a Saturn aspect (+/- 1 day) is a candidate to buy.

On Wednesday, September 11, Venus will leave the favorable confines of Libra (its home sign) and move into Scorpio, its detriment sign. That is supposed to also signify a shift from a favorable to an unfavorable climate, but having been born with Venus in Scorpio, I can tell you that I think the ancients had it all wrong. I like having Venus in Scorpio (but then, what Capricorn Sun would not?). Nevertheless, the subjects of credit and debt come front and center again, when Venus (money and credit) is in Scorpio (debt), September 11-October 7.

Next Saturday, September 14 finds Mars trine Uranus and Venus trine Neptune. Trines are generally considered favorable in the study of astrology, so maybe equities (Venus) can continue their rally into this time, +/- 3 trading days. Let’s hope so, because the following week finds Venus conjunct Saturn, and Pluto going stationary direct. That becomes a little more serious, highlighting those aforementioned “detrimental” qualities of Venus in Scorpio (Pluto rules Scorpio).

Longer-Term Thoughts

“Ambition robs you of your childhood.” John Irving

We start the new week with a Mars-Saturn square, from Leo to Scorpio. Mars-Saturn hard aspects are more than just a little stubborn when in fixed signs like Leo and Scorpio (think Bill and Hillary). They are entrenched, and even if you clearly show how one’s position is counter-productive, they exhibit classical qualities of deafness. They don’t hear. They don’t want to hear anything that causes them to veer off their already-made-up mind, even if it is shown to be troublesome. It is almost as if they welcome a fight. They draw “lines in the sand,” and if you cross them, you pay. With Mars in Leo present, the fight is usually to show who is in control. However, more often than not, the battle that they fight and win usually turns the tide of the larger war against them.

This is not a favorable time to be the aggressor or to attempt to intimidate others with your strength and power. Mars in Leo – actually, anything in Leo - is the eternal quest to be young and innocent, to be the “hero” in the eyes of an adoring public. But in hard aspect to Saturn, especially in Scorpio, blind ambition for power and control can result in a major conflict, a struggle to achieve the ends that one thought possible, but now discovers is not so easily attainable because the support expected just isn’t there. You can’t force others to get behind your ideals if they sense your ambition is tied to motives they don’t share or understand, or even see. It is a classical aspect for a political disappointment if one acts in haste or without listening to others who might disagree with the means to your end, or even the purpose itself.

Loss of innocence and youth through ambition is in the heavens all month. On September 25, Saturn and the Moon’s North Node will be in conjunction in Scorpio. This is another signature of ambition to control, with a large dose of vengeance possibly tied into one’s actions. With so much Scorpio and Saturn involved this month, it will be a challenge to come up with win-win decisions. This is more of a case of “winner take all…” and then work like hell to hold onto it as others try to undo you. Someone loses. That’s the usual outcome with Saturn in Scorpio. It was easier when Saturn was in Libra just a couple of years ago, because at least everyone shared in the pain and the gain, or at least they believed they did at the time (think Arab Spring then; think Egypt and Syria today).

The Saturn-Lunar North Node conjunction is approximately an 11-year cycle. The last time in happened was June 6, 2002. World stock markets were falling into their 4-year cycle troughs, in October 2002 in the USA and in March 2003 for the rest of the world. It was also the time the United States was trying to build an international coalition to bring down Saddam Hussein. The allegation then was that Hussein and Iraq were stockpiling chemical weapons of mass destruction. You see these themes repeating over and over again in Mundane Astrology and you wonder: why “they” don’t see this. Probably because "... ambition robs you of your childhood."  Unfortunately, that ambition of some people robs a lot of people – innocent people – of their childhoods, too.

There is more to come shortly, and astrologers need to be thinking about this. Comet Ison is becoming visible in the skies. Ison is being touted as the “Comet of the Century,” and it is just passing Mars now. It will come closest to Earth (but not as close as it came to Mars recently) in late November. Comets, to astrologers, are messengers of the cosmos, or gods, if you will. They indicate the fall of leaders and a shift of power. It is noteworthy that Ison comes into view as it passes Mars. This means it will probably have a Mars-like impact upon the world in 2014.

Thank God, Neptune is in Pisces. Not everything has to be war-like. There is a way out. John Lennon sang a song about it 40 years ago. “Give Peace a Chance.” And hope that our leaders find the right balance between their ambition and childhood, one that takes into account the needs of those they were elected to serve, and not solely their own.

The Week Ahead

We start the week with crescent lunar phase.  Watch the information that comes up in the next 3 days.  What are you learning that speaks to your power or empowerment or maybe lack of it?  What are you learning that directs you to cut the waste?  Where are you winning battles but losing the war?

Monday is tense.    Mars the warrior in theatrical Leo is gunning for drama.  Mars wants things his way but he is squaring off with Saturn in cold as ice Scorpio.   What happens when General Patton meets James Bond?   Lot of ego skirmishes.     Get out of the way of power trippers or they will consume you.

Mercury goes into Libra on Monday which at first blush seems "light and Libra breezy" Yeah..No.  As soon as Mercury makes his move he is beginning his bitch session with Pluto and then later Uranus.  Communication will be tense as some seek superficial, let's-play-nice attitude while others see the value of going deep on something and overhauling it.   Or if you prefer, "la-dee-da" versus deep psychological maneuvers.   Brains will hurt as people lose it.     All challenging for sure.

Pets Virgo

Small animals technically fall under Virgo's jurisidiction.  But this is so darn cute I would have to put it up during any lunar phase.  Luckily I found it now during Virgo.

A Story MADE for Virgo New Moon

Certain bacteria may help ward off obesity

I saw this in today's LA times.

Bacteria in the human gut may play a key role in who is obese or lean and could lead to treatments for obesity, a study finds.

By Melissa Healy

The microorganisms in the human gut appear to play a pivotal role in determining whether a person is lean or obese, new research shows.

The study, published online Thursday by the journal Science, is the strongest evidence yet that what's inside an individual's digestive tract influences the risk of obesity and its related health problems, such as Type 2 diabetes. The work helps explain the nation's 30-year run-up in excess weight — and it may supply a potential solution to the resulting epidemic, experts said.

"Many factors contribute to obesity," said the study's senior author, Dr. Jeffrey I. Gordon, director of the Center for Genome Sciences and Systems Biology at Washington University in St. Louis. For people whose gut organisms are not equipped to fight obesity, it may be possible to "add microbes to fill the vacancies" needed to keep a person lean and healthy, he said.
Gordon and a multinational group of scientists sought to isolate the gut microbiome's effect on obesity from better-known influences such as genes, diet and exercise.

They recruited four sets of identical female twins in which one twin was lean and the other obese. Through stool samples, the researchers gathered a representative collection of the bacteria, viruses and protozoans flourishing in each woman's gut. They transplanted that microscopic zoo into a large group of mice whose intestines were essentially a blank slate.

Almost immediately, the mix of living organisms inside a mouse's digestive tract began to resemble the one inside its human donor. Soon the mice came to resemble more and more the women whose gut microbiomes they had adopted.

Despite eating about the same amount of the same low-fat chow, mice that got transplants from an obese twin began to gain weight and lay down fat deposits. The mice that got transplants from a lean twin remained lean.

The intestinal flora of the lean mice also worked better at breaking down and fermenting dietary sugars than did their counterparts in the obese mice. In the mice that got transplants from a lean twins, undigestible starches passed through the digestive system more speedily, resulting in thinner mice.

"It was a very, very clear, elegant, well-thought-out study," said Dr. Lawrence J. Brandt, a gastroenterologist at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City who wasn't involved in the research. By stripping out the effects of genes and diet, the experiment helps refine experts' understanding of the specific ways that the gut's living organisms influence a complex phenomenon like weight gain, he said.

The study also demonstrated the protective power of cohabitation when it comes to microbiome quality and obesity — at least for rodents, which eat each other's droppings. On a typical diet of low-fat, plant-heavy food, mice that carried the microbiome of an obese twin stayed lean when they were housed with mice that got transplants from a lean woman.

While the lean microbiome appeared to dominate when the diet was healthy, cohabitation didn't help obesity-prone mice that were given a diet high in fat and low in plant matter. When the mice that got transplants from obese twins ate like typical Americans, there was no evidence that the organisms from their lean housemates were becoming established in their guts.

The study is the first to show that changes in the microbiome cause changes in body shape and metabolic performance, rather than the other way around, said Dr. Karine Clement, an endocrinologist and nutrition expert at Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris.
"You can really see the effect of gut microbiota here," said Clement, who wasn't involved in the study.

That step should pave the way for the use of microbiome research in the diagnosis and treatment of obesity and related metabolic disorders, such as Type 2 diabetes, experts said.
As scientists home in on the specific bacteria involved, they may be able to introduce such organisms to people who are obese or predisposed to obesity.

Antibiotics might also prove useful as a future therapy for obesity or diabetes.
"If we knew there was a bug driving obesity, then one could target the elimination of that bacteria — or if one protected against obesity, then one could imagine giving that as a therapy for obesity," said Sarkis Mazmanian, a Caltech microbiologist who was not involved in the latest research.
Mazmanian cautioned, however, that the probiotic approach, which fosters the growth of "good bacteria" in the gut, will "probably be easier" because antibiotics can kill off lots of beneficial bacteria and allow other harmful bacteria to grow out of control.

The findings may also help experts figure out why obesity has roughly tripled in the last 30 years in the U.S., and why that pattern is happening even more swiftly in developing countries.
Researchers increasingly suspect that preservatives and antibiotics in food and medicine, along with the widespread adoption of antibacterial cleaners, have reshaped the population of the average gut in ways that may have set off changes in the metabolism, immune system and hormone balance of large groups of people, resulting in weight gain
"We've only scratched the surface of our understanding of the power of the microbiota," Mazmanian said.

Virgo New Moon, Make the Most of this 28 day cycle

Yep, Syria looks like it is wrapped up in TNT.  Are we the roadrunner or are we the coyote?  I don't know but it is a mess of gigantic proportions.    God only knows how that is going to play out.  And I do have my suspicions that if it does not go kaboom now I wonder about the spring...but we'll save that conversation for another day.

In the meantime, there is a great opportunity with The Virgo New Moon and 28 day cycle.  This New Moon has some lovely aspects and my feeling is we need to make the most of that energy.  We have got a lot of pressures around us and if we can make something work in our favor during this lunar cycle then I say --go for it.

My full article can be found HERE.

Here is a snippet.

Virgo New Moon

For those of us in the northern hemisphere we are wrapping up a long hot summer.  For those of us in the southern hemisphere we are wrapping up a long cold winter.   In the north we are ready to take a look at the crops and determine the right time to harvest.   In the south we are ready to look at the hard soil and determine the right time to plant seeds.    If you miss the details you can miss the right moment and “details” is the key word for Virgo.

At this point in time I do not need to explain Virgo to you.  You have Virgo friends, you know the drill.   Virgo ties up lose ends, Virgo micro manages the world.   It will tidy up health issues, diet stuff, it will clean out clutter.  Of course the Virgo nerves and insecurities are legendary.  They can rattle.  And when their nerves and brain are in overwhelm they are super critical and everyone runs for the hills to get away from them.    They also have a tendency to be a hypochondriac about their own body or the bodies of loved ones. And Virgo has a hard time believing in God.   But at their core, they do best when they are serving.  It is not that Virgo should be a servant, per se, but they see themselves as serving.  Serving their family, serving a great cause, serving their own creativity, serving their lungs and heart when they exercise.   They frame things as ‘serving’.      And when Virgo absolutely excels is when they are taking care of the details while and this is a big one…while serving a bigger vision.  That is gold.

Having said that, right now, during these 28 days we must go for the gold.      Not bronze, not silver but gold.   So, get your Virgo hat on.  We have work to do.

This Virgo New Moon the Sun and the Moon in Virgo are in trine with Pluto and sextile with Jupiter.    What a gift!   In fact I would argue it is a great, big, golden gift.  But we need to put these 28 days in context of the bigger astrological cycles.

Take a breath—we need to go over stuff.

2014 GRAND CROSS

In spring of 2014 we will be experiencing one hell of an astrological time.  In March and April there will be a grand cross between Mars, Pluto, Uranus and Jupiter.

Astrologers are not prone to be in fear since we know that mankind survives even the most hideous of aspects.   But having said that, next spring could be rough.  I would be remiss if I did not mention many astrologers see a war.    Others talk about environmental issues.   And of course many talk about more financial cracks to say the least.     And to all of that I say, “Sure, it is all possible.”     But I don’t want to get bogged down in global “what ifs”, especially during the Virgo New Moon.  We need to focus on the details of your life in the midst of these huge astro cycles.    And in order to do that we need to look backwards.

In the late summer of 2008 Pluto turned direct and headed out of Sagittarius, a sign he had been in for over fifteen year.   Within a week of turning direct the stock market crashed and we were launched into The Great Recession and by the way, not one astrologer on planet Earth was surprised.     Pluto is just that important.

How has your life changed since that fall of 2008?  How has it not?     Let’s go through each year and look at what was pushing on all of us and how we handled it.

2008

August 2008:   Pluto turns Direct

November 2008:  Saturn Oppose Uranus, Pluto enters Capricorn

Looking back on that time ask these questions:

How was the cold reality making you work harder than ever?  How did you feel like a victim or martyr?  How did your health feel compromised?  How did you feel like you didn’t have a grip on your numbers? How did you feel like you didn’t have a grip on your schedule?  How did you waste your time? Who were you wasting your time on?   How were your nerves so fray and raw they compelled your choices?

BIG 2008 QUESTION:

If the 2013YOU could go back in time and talk to the 2008YOU what would you tell her/him?   Avoid what?  Do what?  Don’t do what?   How did the 2008YOU listening to his or her gut?  How did the you back then ignore your gut?  At what cost?  Don’t blow off that question.
